Rejuvenate the Eye Area and Reverse the signs of Ageing
Firm skin around the eye area. Smooth skin that is tight, dense, with good elasticity and relatively line free. Firm and lifted eyelids that aren’t touching the lashes, and an even skin tone, void of dark eye circles and with just a hint of some laughter lines to show character … This is what we all probably take for granted in our younger years and would love to maintain for as long as possible.
Unfortunately, the delicate eye-area with its thinner skin is one of the first places on our face to show the signs of ageing. So, care must be taken if we’re to prevent accelerated ageing. However, if you’re like me and you weren’t always careful when you were younger, well thankfully there is much we can do now to help in rejuvenating the eye area and also delay further ageing.
A Three Part Blog Series Dedicated to the Eye Area
I’m writing a series of 3 blogs dedicated to this subject and I’ll cover ingredients in skincare products that help, as well as other tips to rejuvenate this delicate area and prevent/delay further ageing.
Today, in part one, we will look at dark under-eye circles.
Dark Under Eye-Circles – The Possible Causes
Dark circles may appear in tired skin due to a sluggish circulation. The blood flow in the under-eye area almost stops, and the dark bilirubin pigment in the haemoglobin from the deoxygenated blood can leak from capillaries into tissue spaces. The skin in the under-eye area is very thin and delicate, therefore it is much more visible and will appear as a purple/grey discoloration underneath the eyes.
However, this is a condition that can also be hereditary. Other factors that can influence the cause of dark circles are hormones and a lack of sleep. In addition, sun damage and premature skin ageing can also be a factor, where the skin is thinner due to the loss of collagen and elastin.
If the cause, or one of the possible causes of dark under-eye circles is poor blood circulation, then improving blood flow is essential. Poor circulation may be due to age, lifestyle factors or even illness. Factor depending, this will determine what you’re able to do to boost circulation. However, one of the best ways to boost circulation and get some vital oxygen into the body is to get outside and exercise in the fresh air, get your body moving and get the blood flowing around the body delivering nutrients effectively, right where they need to be. This also helps antioxidants to be delivered exactly where they need to be and ready to fight damaging free radicals that cause oxidative stress and premature skin ageing.
Another way to boost circulation is by simply using your hands and fingers to massage the skin. Gentle massage around the eye area (you can be more firm over the rest of the face) and lightly tapping with the fingertips will help to boost circulation and bring life to the skin. You’ll see the benefits in your complexion if you take an extra five minutes in your skin care regime to do this, rather than simply applying products to the skin and leaving them to sit on the skin’s surface.
Thinner Skin in the Delicate Eye-Area
Where the skin is much finer around the eye-area, and particularly if there is sun damage or premature ageing, a boost to collagen production is vital to strengthen the skin. Antioxidants are also vital in this delicate area to prevent free radical damage. Using targeted eye products that contain antioxidants and other beneficial ingredients will help greatly to improve the skin’s strength and prevent further damage. As the skin in this area is plumped up and strengthened with increased collagen, this reduces any visible darkness.
Ingredients that Specifically Target Dark Under-Eye Circles
Regu-Age PF is a combination of Hydrolysed rice protein (peptides), Glycine Soja (purified natural soy) and Superoxide Dismutase. It’s paraben free and clinically proven to reduce dark circles and improve skin texture by more than 30% in just four weeks. Below I’ll explore what each individual component of Regu-Age PF does to improve the skin in the eye-area.
Hydrolysed Rice Bran Protein
Increases circulation and oxygen supply to the finer tissues in the under-eye area. It helps to therefore prevent the standstill of blood flow that appears as dark eye circles. Strengthens collagen and visibly reduces the appearance of dark circles.
Glycine Soja Protein
Is an antioxidant that prevents damage to collagen and elastin due to neutralising the damaging free radicals.
Helps to firm and tighten the skin as it protects the skin with its super-antioxidant properties. Protects the delicate tissues from oxidative stress and the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibres – which result in loose thinner skin and lines and wrinkles. This firming and tightening of the skin helps to reduce the appearance of dark eye circles.
Another Beneficial Active Ingredient
Eyeliss is also a combination of three ingredients:
Dipeptide VW Peptide
Helps to stimulate lymphatic drainage and keeps excess fluid from settling in the under-eye area.
Lipopeptide Pal – GQPR
This peptide increases the elasticity and firmness of the skin – therefore improving the appearance of the under-eye area.
Hesperidin Methyl Chalone
Strengthens the capillary walls and lowers the blood flow passing through the tiny blood vessels. The stronger capillary walls help the skin to lose the darker tone in this area.
Other Active Ingredients that are Beneficial in Improving Dark Eye Circles
Matrixyl and Matrixyl 3000
Both help to improve the appearance of dark eye circles. They have other benefits that I’ll talk about in one of the other blog parts.
Soy Rice Peptides
These have been shown to dramatically reduce dark under-eye circles. In clinical trials they were shown to reduce dark circles by up to 35% in just 8 weeks of treatment. Microcirculation in the skin is also improved with Soy Rice Peptides.
As a lack of sleep can be a factor that contributes to dark circles, we’ll look at what can help you achieve a better quality of sleep …
Try and get Quality Sleep
A lack of good quality sleep can certainly give us tired eyes and exacerbate dark circles. Aim to get at least 7 or 8 hours of quality sleep each night and you’ll wake up to skin that’s more rejuvenated and rested. Try and switch off from technology as early as possible. Take a relaxing bath with Pink Himalayan Salts and essential oils. Spritz the
room or your bedding with a slumber spray to help you relax. Taking Magnesium Citrate can also be beneficial in helping you to relax and bringing on a deeper sleep. I have personally noticed a big difference when I take it. I carefully sourced a capsule supplement rather than a tablet. I’m really impressed with the brand, the purity, and the personal service and knowledge provided after purchasing.
Another factor that can contribute to dark under-eye circles is sun damage.
Protect Your Skin from UV Rays
We all know that we should be wearing an SPF Cream daily to protect our skin from damaging UV rays. Daily SPF protection, combined with extra antioxidant protection from your eye care product (providing it’s antioxidant rich) will help to protect the delicate skin around the eyes from sun damage and premature ageing that thins the already thin skin further. In addition, wearing sunglasses to shield the eyes is also very beneficial in preventing sun damage, and therefore the possibility of developing or worsening dark eye circles.
In conclusion, there are a number of things we can do to improve dark eye circles and also prevent them. Get good quality sleep as much as possible. Protect the delicate skin around your eyes from UV rays and free radical damage with an SPF Cream and targeted antioxidant rich skincare products. Improve circulation with exercise and massage the eye area gently when applying products, gently tapping them in. Do not drag the skin in this more fragile area.
You are able to find the targeted ingredients discussed in this post, in the NCN Eye Fix rollerball serum. This targeted eye-care product dispenses the perfect amount of serum right where it’s needed. And if you need a little help in concealing dark circles and help to even out the tone of the skin – we love Bio-Essence Multi-Effect BB Cream.
