When it comes to the autumn/winter months our skin definitely needs a little more TLC to brave the elements. Autumn skin care requires some simple changes to get through colder months, whilst still maintaining healthy, glowing skin.
Switch Your Cleanser to a Cream or Oil Based Cleanser
A simple tip, but one that can make a big difference to skin. Oil Cleansing with nourishing plant oils that are rich in lipids, leaves skin feeling soft, supple and hydrated. A creamy cleanser is also a good switch from gel-based cleansers, leaving skin feeling more moisturised and soft. Don’t skip the toner either! This restores the pH balance in skin and also removes any last traces of cleanser and hard-water residue that can make skin feel dry and unbalanced. Also, if there’s any residue left on the skin, products you apply afterwards can’t penetrate as easily as there is a barrier in place. Don’t rush the cleansing process. Really take the time to massage your skin, boosting circulation and glow! You’ll be surprised at the difference a 5 minute massage routine can make to the appearance of your skin. We particularly love the NCN Rinsable Cleansing Oil – containing Safflower Oil and Fractionated Coconut Oil.
Layer Your Serums and Add a Replenishing Cream on Top
Don’t skimp on the serums when it comes to your autumn skin care routine. Layering different serums for their different benefits makes sense. For example, Vitamin C Serum is typically not a hydrating serum – but it’s a very powerful antioxidant rich serum and it’s also essential for collagen production and brightens a complexion. Layer with other serums, serums that might reduce skin redness or boost hydration. Give your skin some extra nourishment. With the heating on indoors and the chills outside, moisture is sucked out of skin, leaving you with a more dry, dehydrated and lacklustre complexion.
Still continue to wear an SPF Cream on a daily basis, this is so important! In the evenings, layer a replenishing cream or an oil over the top of your serums. Your skin will be busy repairing and rejuvenating as you sleep, so this is the perfect time to provide it with nourishing ingredients. Our favourite serum and cream duo at this time of year is the NCN DNA Serum and the Volu-Lift Recontouring Face Cream. Hydrating, skin-plumping and antioxidant rich. They boost collagen and also improve natural moisture retention in the skin.
Exfoliate, But Don’t Over-Exfoliate
Exfoliation is certainly one key to a more vibrant complexion. Removing a build up of dead surface skin cells helps to boost cell turnover and ensure that serums can penetrate the skin better and work more effectively. As we age, skin cell turnover slows down and can be sluggish, so exfoliation helps to speed up this process. However, over-zealous exfoliation and exfoliation done far too often can have a very negative impact on skin. Your skin’s barrier function (the protective barrier that protects skin from foreign substances) can be left impaired. An impaired barrier can leave skin feeling irritated. It may look red, feel dry, and also dehydrated as it can’t retain moisture very well. Healthy skin will look and feel supple, hydrated and soft. Exfoliate, but proceed with caution and get to really know your own skin. We’re all unique and what works well for one person may not be the same as the other. We love to use the NCN Pumpkin Peel once a month for exfoliation as well as a healthy dose of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
Essential Fatty Acids – Even More Essential for Autumn Skin Care
Essential fatty acids are called ‘essential’ with good reason. They’re essential for healthy functioning skin. They help skin cells membranes to be stronger, firmer and ‘bouncier’. Stronger cell membranes can retain more moisture in the skin, meaning your skin will feel softer, more supple and with better elasticity! This even more of a need when it comes to your autumn skin care regime as typically we lose more moisture from our skin in these months. Ensure that you’re eating enough good fats in the form of nuts and seeds, avocados, oils such as coconut oil and olive oil. Eat oily fish such as sardines and omega 3 rich salmon. Top up your omega 3’s with a fish oil supplement, for skin that feels moisturised from within. We love Just For Tummies Fish Oils. Just one a day is the equivalent of half a tin of sardines!
Top up Your Vitamin D Levels
Vitamin D is an essential vitamin for so many bodily functions and healthy skin. With daylight hours now much shorter with the clock change and people being more aware of the need for a daily SPF, not everyone is getting their much needed quota. Try and get at least 15 minutes outside daily with some exposed skin. Just a short walk or time in the garden can make a big difference. To boost your autumn skin care regime, top up with a vitamin D3 supplement to ensure you’re getting enough in these darker months.
Hope the tips help!
