Ceramides. What are they? Why are they an amazing skincare ingredient? How are they beneficial, and particularly at this time of the year?
You may have heard of Ceramides. They are often used in effective skincare products, because they are an ingredient that works to improve the health, appearance and feel of the skin. They have a specific role and if you use products with ceramides, you will notice a difference in how your skin looks and feels.
What are Ceramides?
Ceramides are natural lipids within our skin. When we’re younger we have an abundance of them and they keep the skin plump and hydrated. They’re an oily, waxy substance that is like the glue between the skin cells. In effect, they help to keep our skin waterproof and are vital to our skin’s natural barrier function being healthy. A healthy barrier helps to keep moisture in and protects the skin from foreign substances and infection.
An impaired barrier function leaves skin feeling dry and dehydrated as water is lost more easily. Skin may be red, irritated and sore. Ceramides attract and retain moisture in the skin – and skin that holds more moisture is healthier, plumper and hydrated.
As we age however, Ceramide levels decrease – like all of the good stuff that makes for a more youthful complexion. Collagen and Hyaluronic Acid being two of the others that decrease as we age. Loss of ceramides contributes towards thinner skin that is more dry, dehydrated and wrinkled.
Why are They Beneficial in Skincare Products?
Skincare products that contain ceramides help to replenish the natural lipids that are lost through the ageing process and also environmental factors. If your skin is quite dry or sensitive, using a skincare product containing ceramides will help to improve the condition of the skin. It will help to improve the barrier function of the skin, which means less water loss and more moisture ‘locked in’ to the skin.
People that suffer with skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis will find using a product containing ceramides beneficial in helping to improve the condition . Taking a good quality fish oil daily is hugely beneficial in providing Omega 3’s to the skin from within. These strengthen the skin cell membranes which help to keep moisture in while also allowing nutrients to pass into the cell more easily. Waste and toxins are pushed out more effectively. Think of your cells like firm little balls when the membranes are strong – plump and bouncy!
Why are They so Beneficial During Colder Seasons?
In the colder months our skin can really suffer. Colder temperatures outside and central heating inside has a real impact on how our skin feels, and it can feel dry and parched of moisture. Using a cream that contains ceramides can help to replenish the skin with the lipids it needs and also improve the skin’s barrier function. This means less moisture loss, and it will also improve the condition of the skin. Nourishing skin to improve suppleness and help it to feel smoother and full of moisture. Skin needs extra TLC during autumn and winter months and ceramides help to provide that TLC.
