Following on from part one in this three part blog series – all about rejuvenating the eye area. Today we’re looking at eye bags and puffiness under the eyes.
What Causes Eye Bags and Puffiness
There are several factors that can contribute to bags and puffiness and I’ll touch on those. I’ll also look at things that we can do to help eliminate eye bags and under-eye puffiness.
Most of us at some point or another has likely suffered with bags under the eyes. Perhaps from a lack of sleep, too much alcohol or from our dietary choices. Eye bags and puffy eyes can also be a factor that comes with age.
As we age and the skin tissues weaken, which they’re prone to in the delicate eye area where skin is much finer. This leads to a lack of firmness and the sagging ‘bag’ appearance under the eyes. Collagen levels diminish each year as we age, and so encouraging collagen production, providing the building blocks needed to produce collagen and also protecting the skin from oxidative stress and sun damage, are all essential to avoiding that sagging, bag-like look.
Certain lifestyle factors can also be linked to eye bags and puffiness. Too much salt in the diet will encourage water retention, which can accumulate underneath the eyes, giving them a puffy appearance. Not drinking enough water also encourages water retention. Also, the position in which you sleep can affect the appearance of your eyes upon waking. I’m guilty of sleeping on my front quite often, but this sleeping position does nothing good for the eyes or face. Sleeping on your back is the best ‘beauty sleep’ position. I’m not sure anyone sleeps like that all night though.
Simple Changes That can Make a Difference:
Drink more water to discourage water retention
Reduce salt intake and switch to pink Himalayan salt or sea salt
Try to sleep on your back where possible
Lymphatic drainage massage – easy to do with fingers and incorporate into your skin care routine. I do this simple massage morning and night, sometimes quickly and sometimes I take much longer, time depending
I also like to use the Georgia Louise Rose Quartz Butterfly Stone or a rose quartz Gua Sha skin tool
Protect your skin with a diet rich in antioxidants, to fight free radicals that damage skin
Use specific Eye Care Products that protect the skin and use targeted ingredients to encourage collagen production and reduce eye bags/puffiness
Other Remedies That you can use From Your own Kitchen:
Chilled cucumber slices over the eyes help to cool and refresh the eye area
Teabags – soaked in warm water and then cooled in the fridge before placing over the eyes, are a mild diuretic and help to reduce puffiness
Face Yoga Method
I’ve recently become hooked on Face Yoga and the Face Yoga Method by the lovely Fumiko. Incorporating some face yoga moves specifically for the eye area and also moves that encourage blood circulation, can improve the skin’s elasticity. It can also improve the appearance of bags and puffiness. I’m not an affiliate for Fumiko, I simply admire her work. I love the benefits I notice myself from face yoga and will leave this link to a course I purchased. It’s a bargain and you might love it and find it useful.
Skincare Products to Help Reduce Eye Bags and Puffiness
Regarding eye products that help to target the concerns with rejuvenating the eye area. As mentioned before in the part one blog, NCN Eye Fix is a targeted product for the skin around the eyes. The ingredients are widely researched and hand-picked by Nanci (NCN’s Founder and an Aesthetician) for their effectiveness.
The NCN Multi-Active Peptide Matrixyl Serum 25% is also a product that can improve dark circles, bags, puffiness and target wrinkles. This serum can be used over the entire face, neck and decollete.
Here’s what Jane has to say about the Matrixyl Serum:
“This is my favourite all round anti ageing serum. It’s powerful and effective, but oh so gentle. I look forward to using it in the mornings because it’s like a fresh drink of water for my skin. It’s as good as the best eye serums I’ve used and easier than needing a separate product. It gets rid of eye rings and bags quickly, and fades crows feet. It reduces wrinkles everywhere, makes my skin look smoother, firmer, and younger. Love it.”
I hope you found this useful. If you did and you think it may help someone you know, please can you share.
With much gratitude
