As we’re now well into Autumn and there’s a distinct chill in the air, the cosy jumpers are out and the boots are on. No doubt, if you’re like me, you’re naturally turning to warming comfort foods and the heating in your house has now been switched on – at least in the mornings and evenings. Skin can suffer in the colder months. The combination of harsh outdoor temperatures and central heating indoors can leave it feeling parched and dry, like the dried out leaves outside. Just a few simple changes will ensure that you retain healthy happy skin and skin radiance throughout autumn and winter.
Switching to a creamy or oil-based cleanser can help your skin to feel soft, nourished and hydrated. Take time to really massage the cleanser into the skin and get the circulation going. I personally like to start with an oil-based cleanser. I used to use plain grapeseed oil but I now use the Rinsable Cleansing Oil. Sometimes I follow with another cleanser, but often it’s the only cleanser I choose to use. This cleansing oil leaves skin feeling super-soft, nourished and hydrated. It nourishes your skin’s barrier function which is so important to maintaining healthy and hydrated skin that is well-balanced.
Exfoliation Is Key To Smooth Skin and Radiance
Exfoliate gently 2-3 times a week. Using either a cleansing brush or something like the microfibre cloth. You could also use products that contain AHA’s. Regular exfoliation ensures that you’re removing any dead surface skin cells and that the products you apply to the skin afterwards are absorbed into the skin more effectively. Therefore their efficacy is greater. Please be careful though, over-exfoliation will damage the skin’s barrier function and lead to a whole host of skin issues.
In the summer months we can often use a little less. Maybe one or two serums and an SPF Cream. In the autumn and winter we may find we benefit from layering different serums (for different needs). Some help the skin to feel plumped up and hydrated. Other serums may be less hydrating but target other skin concerns such as redness or hyperpigmentation. Pay attention to your skin and what you think it needs.
Creams And Oils – The Comfort Blanket that Helps you Achieve Skin Radiance
Layering on a blanket of protection in the form of a nourishing cream or oil, is like us wrapping a comfort blanket over us at night on the sofa (I always have one). It’s a layer of protection, helping to feed your skin vital nutrients and giving it some extra TLC against the cold, the wind, the indoor heating.
Ceramides are an amazing skincare ingredient. They provide the lipids your skin needs and help to nourish the skin’s barrier function.
Hyaluronic Acid is naturally occurring in our bodies. It’s often referred to as the fountain of youth with very good reason. It provides a cushion like filler between skin cells. It helps to keep joints lubricated so they can move freely and it lubricates our eyes. It can hold up to 1000 times its own weight in water and so using this in skincare and in supplements can help the skin to retain more moisture, plumping out fine lines and wrinkles and helping skin to feel ‘juicy’ and hydrated.
Facial Oils for Nourished Skin
If you don’t use a facial oil, the colder months are a good time to introduce one and reap the rewards. Natural plant oils used regularly can really transform a complexion and make such a difference to the skin in terms of skin radiance. Crammed with Omega 3’s, vitamins and minerals … they literally feed the skin. A good time to use a facial oil is at night. Skin is busy repairing whilst we sleep, so applying skincare that feeds and nourishes the skin, supplying it with useful nutrients as we sleep – helps to ensure we wake up to glowing skin that looks and feels rejuvenated. NCN’s Corrective Face Oil Cocktail contains 8 Organic Oils that all work to correct different skin issues and reduce signs of ageing in the skin
It’s simple really. Apply an SPF Cream every single day. It’s dull outside – apply it. It’s dark and raining – apply it. It’s freezing cold – apply it. Make it a habit every single day. Damaging UV rays are present on even the dreariest of days. Making this a habit will help to protect your skin, keeping it healthy and more youthful looking for longer. Even more important – to protect it from developing skin cancer.
Veggies such as sweet potato, butternut squash and pumpkin all contain vitamin A and C that are essential for skin repair and provide antioxidant protection for the skin. Make use of the seasonal vegetables by making warming soups and stews. It’s not to everyone’s taste to make cold smoothies when it’s cold outside, but a real favourite of mine is the Pumpkin Spice Smoothie, you can use pumpkin or sweet potato. I’ll post the recipe below. Nuts and seeds provide us with protein and good fats, and if you’re not vegetarian then perhaps making bone broth could be your thing. It is known to be one of the most healing foods we can make … However, you can also make fabulous and very tasty vegetarian broths. I love to add plenty of the very powerful and healing – garlic!
The Tip We All Know – But so Important
Last but definitely not least, we all know it – keep drinking plenty of water. Tempting as it is to make lots of ‘cosy drinks’, still factor in your water. Herbal teas are also great for getting more fluids in and you can pick teas that contain beneficial nutrients for your skin – which is why we always include one in your orders. We hope you enjoy them!
Pumpkin spice (or sweet potato) smoothie – For Skin Radiance and Glow!
Cube and roast either pumpkin or peeled sweet potato – optional, also peel and pop on the tray an apple
A frozen banana, if not frozen you can add ice or leave the banana out
A dollop of almond butter – I’m not good with exact measures so I suggest play around to your own personal tastes
Cinnamon, ginger, all-spice, nutmeg. A little maple syrup … Maca powder is also nice added to it. It gives a real caramel/malty taste and it has many benefits, one of which is helping t balance hormones.
Blend together with unsweetened almond milk or coconut milk.
Prepare to become addicted and baking sweet potato or pumpkin on a daily basis. Enjoy this smoothie for glowing skin!
